The NASA Artemis Traveling Exhibit was created to bring the Artemis Mission to life as a dynamic, audience-centric experience. Debuting at San Diego Comic-Con, the exhibit celebrated the Artemis Mission’s groundbreaking goals through innovative storytelling, interactive elements, and inclusivity, inviting attendees to see themselves as part of the mission.
Role: Creative Director, Exhibit Designer, and Narrative Strategist.
Deliverables: Traveling Exhibit Design, Role-Based Storytelling Framework, Interactive Quiz, and Visual and Immersive Assets, Onsite Support for Audience Engagement.
Key Components:
Empathy & Research: Designed an experience to resonate with Comic-Con attendees by emphasizing audience-centric design and engaging storytelling.
Concept Development: Introduced six narrative characters—The Gravity Guardian, Star Adventurer, Space Innovator, Mission Leader, Artemis Artist, and Launch Igniter—each representing unique paths and challenges within the Artemis Mission.
Design Execution: Developed immersive elements such as a photo booth where visitors could step into 3D-printed boots, take a quiz to determine their alter ego, and explore mission content through QR codes.
Engagement Strategy: Integrated interactive features, like an illustrated storyline with astronaut Callie and her robot RT, along with exclusive giveaways (e.g., limited edition NASA pins), to maximize audience participation and accessibility.
Process: Building on the success of the "What Boots Will You Wear?" framework, the exhibit invited visitors to take a quiz to determine their mission role and step into their respective “boots” through a photo opportunity. This moment of discovery encouraged participants to see how their unique strengths aligned with Team Artemis roles. The exhibit combined immersive storytelling, interactive displays, and shareable content to connect Comic-Con’s superhero-loving attendees with NASA’s real-world heroes.
One key innovation was the introduction of audience-focused narrative storytelling, enabling NASA to explore a new, inclusive approach to exhibit design. The experience not only engaged a high volume of visitors but also used data-driven insights from quiz engagement to refine storytelling approaches.
